A galaxy of racing stars – Davy Russell, Joseph O'Brien, Kevin Manning, Nina Carberry and more – came to support the fourth edition of the Treo Eile Christmas Show on Thursday.
It was former champion jockey Russell who won the HRI Thoroughbred Classic Cup with his son Finn. He rode former pursuer Our Father, who ran 17 times for trainers David Pipe and Gordon Elliott.
John Osborne, Director of Welfare at Horse Racing Ireland, commented: “This event brings together all the equestrian sectors and shows how versatile the Thoroughbred is when it comes to adapting to a different lifestyle after racing and it is wonderful to see “that these horses are still powerful even after ten years.” later.
“Everyone commented on the high standards on display, with so many double faults and such an exhilarating finale where the final obstacle throw for the last rider would decide the outcome. This is in part due to the clinics, training and support that Anne O’Connor and the Treo Eile team have provided to this growing area.”
The evening was supported by some key industry leaders including Godolphin, Aga Khan, Coolmore as well as the IEBF and Foal Levy Fund. Horse Racing Ireland was the title sponsor, while Weatherbys Ireland GSB, Ltd., Connolly's RED MILLS and Equiuip each sponsored individual classes earlier in the day.
Harry McCalmont, Director of Treo Eile, concluded: “Once again we are so proud to see the former racehorse in all his glory. This evening is the perfect demonstration of his talents, versatility and trainability.” It is wonderful to see the standard of Thoroughbreds improving year on year, reflecting the efforts of the initiatives supported by Treo Eile. A large thank you goes out to our wonderful show committee, all of our volunteers, riders, those who provide horses and all of our great sponsors.”
