Preakness an option for derby-second-placed journalism, Baeza and Sandman to Belmont Stakes

Everything appears well with coach Bill Mottes Churchill Downs Barn, after Souverany in the 5 million dollar derby from Woodford Reserve was presented on May 3, worth 5 million US dollars from Woodford Reserve. As a mott and the Godolphin team about possible next steps in relation to the potential triple crown bid of the Colt, the connections of several other top derby runners are similarly examined the options for their runs.

Michael McCarthy, coach of the second -placed and beaten favorite journalism, said that on Sunday morning it is challenging to know where the Son of Curlin ends up next. However, he mentioned that the apply on May 17 at the Pimlico Race Course was an option.

The coach said he would have talks with the owners in the next few days and make a decision. Journalism is owned by Eclipse full blood partners, Bridlewood Farm, Don Alberto Stable, Robert Lapenta, Elayne Stables 5 and Coolmore partners.

“We give him a day or two to get his feet under him and see where we are,” said McCarthy. “He has gone back from quick rest, so we will see.”

Journalism took the first three starts of his career in a seven-week time frame last autumn and culminated in a Futurity victory in Los Alamitos. His 1 1/2 length defeat in the derby was his first since he took third place in his career debut with six Furlongs.

McCarthy achieved his first triple crown race victory with Rombauer in the Preakness Stakes 2021 and would be grateful for another chance to contest the 1 3/16 mile classic if the decision is made.

“It is still very prestigious,” said McCarthy. “I would like to win every three -time crown race. I would have loved to put the derby into the books and later worried about the rest of the stuff. Preakness has a lot of weight, Belmont has a lot of weight. It is a great five weeks of the race. Just being part of it.”

Journalism will remain in Churchill Downs in the near future when final decisions are made. If connections are made to skip the Belmont Stakes from June 7, McCarthy said that he would send early on the Saratoga racetracks.

McCarthy was visibly emotional to the defeat on Sunday morning, but could not be proud of the efforts that his winner of the Santa Anita Derby produced.

“I thought he went very well,” said McCarthy. “It was regrettable that he was stuck a little a bit there. He was a little further under the wire for the first time when I would have liked it, but he would have to beat the horse that he should beat.”

McCarthy said he was impressed by the sovereignty that spent the preparation season and during the training times a week before the derby.

“I thought after the Florida Derby, also with the winner [Tappan Street] Ran, I thought [Sovereignty] Was to beat the horse, “he said.” What I saw here this week is the same. If it is a parched race track, the result might be different. I don't know, I can't make excuses for my horse.

“When we got out of the curve, I could see junior [Alvarado on Sovereignty] Was just as good behind us and moved as well. I thought it was just a question of who would stay with you longer. Sovereignty remained a little longer than [Journalism] act. “

Jockey of journalism, Umberto Rispoli, said after the race that he did not believe that

Regardless of whether it is the preciscation, Belmont or further down, McCarthy said that he was confident that he will have another shot on sovereignty this year, and said that he believes that both horses will be in conversation for the Eclipse Prize as a champion 3-year-old.

“He is as good as in his class this year. He appeared and ran as announced,” said McCarthy. “Take our horse away yesterday. He was very, very good.”

Baeza, Sandman Eye Belmont Stakes

CRK Stable and Grandview Equine's Baeza also ran well in the derby. After a stressful week for the connections when they were waiting to see if he would be withdrawn from the also justified list, the son of McKinzie rewarded her patience with a closing third place.

“I don't think he had the best of travel,” said coach John Shirffs. “For the first time on an off track, that's a bit of a different experience. But he acted so well.”

Since Sunday morning, Shirffs said that the prevalence for the half -brother (the same dam [mother]other father [father]) by 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage and 2024 Belmont winner Dornoch.

“At that moment we prefer to return to California and group a little up-to-date,” said Shirffs.

He mentioned that the plans could change at any time before the Colt got on the plane, which was still an indefinite date until Sunday morning, but pointed out that this was highly unlikely. However, Baeza is considered to have another attempt to become the third classic winner of Puca in three years in the Belmont Stakes of June 7th.

The meeting of Baeza in the Belmont Stakes will most likely be DJ Stable, Stable, West Point -Vollblut and CJ Stables' Arkansa's Derby winner Sandman from CJ Stables. Mark Casse Mark Casse, Hall of Fame trainer, was in his barn on Sunday morning and said goodbye to the many connections of the Colt: “See you in Belmont.”

“Before the derby, I had said that we would only go to prevalence if we won the derby,” said Casse about jumping on the Belmont. “He won in Saratoga, I like the timing for it.”

Sandman's father, tapit, has produced four winners of the Belmont Stakes in the usual 1/2 mile removal. This year, as in 2024, the race will take place on the Saratoga racing route on 1 1/4 miles, while the construction of a up-to-date grandstand in Belmont Park continues.

In the derby, Casse, Sandman, said the second choice in the bet, fought a little with the damp racetrack while racing on the rear of the field. In the overdue phase, he made the Mile Rally to conquer seventh place.

“He didn't treat the kickback at all, so he was so far back,” said Casse. “The two best horses ran 1-2. We will relax and look at the Belmont.”

Other derby runners make plans for the future

The Almighty of Owen von Owen von Dutchmen and Racing was one of the biggest surprises in the derby and kept games for fifth place after he asked the pace at a classic distance that coach Brian Lynch and many experts suspected that he was too long for him. After the derby was complete, Lynch repeated his wish to return the son of Speightstown to shorter races.

“We will let the dust or the mud, settle down with the team and speak, but possibly the Woody Stephens next,” he said to Churchill Downs Publicity.

The Woody Stephens Stakes are a seven-furgonian race in the first class on the Belmont Stakes Undercard.

There were disappointments in the Japanese camp when the Luxor Cafe (12th) was affected by a strenuous trip and Daytona (19th) was weakened in the slop. Kate Hunter, representative of Churchill Downs Asia, set on X that both horses appeared in good condition and could return to the USA later in the year to return to the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic on November 1 at DEL Mar.

Potential preakness up-to-date shooters

On Sunday morning, coach Bob Baffert said the Churchill Downs' public relations work that Wood Memorial Stakes from Rodriguez Rodriguez, who had scratched a foot blood from the derby from the derby, his potential representative of the checkness. He has trained since his scratch.

Derby Pacesetter and the reigning 2-year Champion Citizen Bull, who faded up to the 15th place, will return to California and group again.

Trainer Todd Plletcher said on Sunday morning that the Thames of the Thames of Thames from Toyota Blue Gras Stakes still remains possible for the prevention. The Music Colt of the Maclean brakes four Furlongs on May 2 on the training track from Belmont Park in: 48.75.

State veterinarians scratched Pletcher's lonely derby participant Grande on May 2. His owner Mike Repole said that the Colt was dealing with a cracked heel. Pletcher said on Sunday morning that the Curlin Colt on May 5th with the veterinarian Dr. Larry Bramlage from Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital is examined.

“We will see what we will do from there,” said Pletcher.

On Sunday morning in Churchill Downs, Steve Asmussen-trained preakness was hopeful again. The Sizzling Springs Stakes winner from Oaklawn Park jogged two miles on a sloppy route.

After a long release, which followed in his debut in his 2-year season in April after a second place, he became 2 towards 2 this year at the age of 3. He shares the same possession of Winchell-Follbluts, Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith as Twinspires ..
