Journalism overcomes trouble for winning the Santa Anita Derby

Although trainer Michael McCarthy could have ideally wished journalism The Colt had an easier trip in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) on April 5. He was faced with several challenges and overcame everyone spectacular. Journalism not only dominated its four rival more than perhaps his three-quarters long margins learned lessons that should serve him well in his next goal: the Kentucky Derby (G1).

“He was a little aggressively in the first round,” said McCarthy. “Somehow they came out of the fence that went into the first curve, and he became a little aggressive again. He could somehow switch it on the butt and was in a nice rhythm.”

Citizen Bull The 2-year-old man of the last year and one of two Bob Baffert trainees of the race fought with Westwood A virgin, at the front end at the beginning of the 1/8 mile derby Santa Anita Park. Barnes The second from the Baffert barn was with head and head with Baeza During journalism, the favorite driven by Umberto Rispoli, fifth place became fifth in the very compact area.

“Everyone gathered at half miles,” said McCarthy. “Umberto was still somehow in their pockets. Obviously everyone knew that he was to hit the horse, so I think they could take their step as long as they could take their step.

From there, journalism put a great exhibition that was beautifully perceptible. In the second curve he rose, laser focus on Baeza and Citizen Bull in front of him. After Baeza got the better from Citizen Bull, journalism hit Furlong next to Baeza in the last Furlong. Baeza held out with journalism as long as possible, but journalism began to move out for this three-quarter-length border and stop the timer in 1: 49.56.

Baeza proved to be the best of the other and ended 8 1/2 lengths before third place in Westwood. Half a long length separated Westwood and Citizen Bull, with Barnes another 10 lengths.

“We knew that we would have a goal on our back today,” said Aron Wellman, President and founder of Eclipse Thoroughed Partners, a co -owner of journalism. “They wanted to drive him around everywhere. He met a roadblock on the pole with three eights and was stopped really chilly. It takes a superior horse to gather, twitch and get back on his swing.”

Rispoli agreed and said: “It is sporadic for a horse to stay on the pole with three eighths and in this way it comes back into the race. It is always tough, especially for a great horse. But it has such an amazing style and is just an amazing horse.”

Wellman noticed that perseverance is “one of the powerful suits of journalism.” When journalism aimed at Baeza, Wellman felt a trust.

“I am glad that he got the training he did today,” added Wellman. “Diminutive field, but many trouble, so he has the corresponding spice in what was the ultimate goal all the time.”

Citizen Bull tired, reported Baffert.

“When he turned home, he blew pretty well,” said Baffert. “He looked a little tough. He needed the race quite badly.”

Citizen Bull, who ended his 2-year season with a victory in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), won on February 1, on February 1, Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3).

“I don't think it's the distance – he was getting tired,” said Baffert. “There is nothing better than a race. We are not yet lifting the white flag.”

Baffert used to win the Wood Memorial Stakes (G2) <span class=Aqueduct racing route with Rodriguez who ran third in the San Felipe Stakes (G2) on March 1st for journalism and Barnes.

“I was pretty impressed by what he was doing,” said Baffert. “These are nice 3-year-olds in California.”

Because the Santa Anita Derby had only five horses, Kentucky Derby's qualification points reduced to 75% of its original value: 75 to journalism, 37.5 on Baeza, 18.75 to Westwood, 11.25 to Citizen Bull and 7.5 to Barnes.

Journalism had 47.5 points in the race, so a berth in the Kentucky Derby is no problem with 122.5 points. He will go into the race as a favorite after winning four races in a row from his first victory last November. Journalism added the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) to end his 2-year season and opened his 3-year-old campaign with the San Felipe.
