When Arcangelo sailed over the finish line in the Belmont Stakes presented by Nyra on June 10, 2023, he gave Jena Antonucci a historical victory as the first woman to train the winner of a US triple crown race. The victory only seemed to be suitable when the sport celebrated the 50th anniversary of the triple crown of the secretariat for the owner Penny Chenery, a pioneer for himself.
Arcangelo's victory returned to another milestone in the same route 30 years earlier when Julie Krone led the colonial affair to a 2¼-long victory.
Ten years after her victory in Belmont Stakes, Krone returned in the Sattel 2003 last year, in which this jockey benefited from her life of experience to create a miraculous final for her career in Hall of Fame.
Back to the form
Racing is a sport of ups and downs, like those who devote their lives intensely aware of their lives. For Krone, a year was full of success in 1993, including this classic victory against the colonial affair, but also setbacks as spill in Saratoga later in the summer she left several injuries, including a squeezed heart, a broken ankle and a suitable elbow. Another spill within two weeks after her return in 1995 left her vivacious and temporarily. When she retired in 1999, her post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTBS) was diagnosed and was ready to search for the next place.
“You cannot persuade anyone to do something that is hazardous and you can't persuade them from it. It is literally a switch. It just clicks or on, ”thought the Hall of Famer at that moment in her career. “I just didn't want to ride anymore”
The retirement led her to radio for TVG and Hollywood Park as well as the marriage to the long -time lawn author and author Jay Hovdey. The Californian racing scene, in particular the deep jockey colony of the state, observed and commented on their time in the air, led the Hall of Fam to knowledge.
“I talked about these jockeys and watched these races and taken care of what was going on, and then I realized that I could beat these boys,” said Krone.
“I watched the races every day and just became competitive again. It just happened somehow. I didn't even think about it. “
And with that a comeback was born.
Back to drive
Krone took the time to get going again. The Hall of Fam was targeted in the mid -1930s and measured in its return. She galloped horses in the morning to make sure that she was mentally and physically ready to drive competitive in the afternoon. In November 2002 she retired in Santa Anita Park and finished fourth in her first race on Justly Royal and then won her first victory in this next phase of her career six days later. Julie Krone was back.
The novel year brought Krone chances that reminded of their previous years on the east coast. She was safer in her skills because leisure had the opportunity to work on the natural riding art she had developed since her earliest years.
“I rounded her off a little more and actually became a better rider,” she said. “I think that contributed to my success this year.”
She decreased mounts from coaches such as Ron Mcanally and Richard Mandella on horses such as Sweet Return, winner of the Hollywood derby from 2003. Siphonizer who took over the DEL Mar -Futurity in class 2; and Halfbridled, a daughter of the Kentucky Derby winner from 1990, unrestrained. With this stut foal, Krone recognized another milestone.
Krone took the opportunity to work with Halfbridled, thanks to Mandella's deputy trainer Becky Witzman, who put the Hall of Fam on the sensitive teenage stut foal. She worked with Halfbridled in the morning and learned her quirks when Mandella prepared the future champion for her first start. This brought Krone the chance to drive half-brärärlich in her 2-year season and to lead her through victories in her debut, the DEL Mar-Debütante and the Oak Leaf Stakes.
“She had huge, huge steps and tactical gears as if I could do everything I wanted with her,” she recalled. “I almost have to ride her like an older horse. We could do everything we wanted with her. “
These three victories earned half a commitment in the starting gate for the 2003 youth joint in Santa Anita Park, a familiar race track for the talented stut foal. In this breed she faced a total field of 14 and pulled the outermost post. Krone knew that they had a challenge when Halfbrideds preferred to run directly from the tour, but would have to bump from the start gate from the starting gate in order to gain position at an early stage.
“On half a mile stand I already heard a few jockeys who already started chirping, but she just started to relax like: 'Let me know when you need me,'” recalled Krone. “She throws her ears back in the middle of the race and heard more Jockeys Chirp, and I had to start going, 'Oh, just' as I did in the morning and said it wasn't time.
“As soon as she relaxed, it wasn't as if she had to be encouraging to get started.”
Halfbridled would take the lead on the route and withdraw a 2½-length victory, which would win her first winner of the Breeder 'Cup for 15 years after being the first woman to drive at the end of the year.
Like Penny Chenery in front of her and Jena Antonucci after her, every milestones from Krone came from the difficult work she had in her skills. It was this perseverance and persistence that brought it to the right place for another milestone at the right time.

Remember a storybook season
This season 2003, Krone not only gave the chance to ride halfbridLED, who won the 2-year-old Stut foal with the champion with her unbeaten record, but also to the last race of his career, the Pacific classic class 1, at DEL Mar, which he with 3 ¼ length in a track record time of 1: 59.11 for 1: 1-miles aird-aird-AIRD miles won with 3 ¼ lengths. Champions Gun Runner and Game winner. “Every hair was available. He was perfect. It was just a wonderful victory and on such an iconic horse. “
However, the heights of 2003 came with a low that made the crown ready to leave the saddle again. A spill in December, just a few weeks after her historical victory at Halbbridled, left the Hall of Fam with broken ribs and muscle cracks. She returned after almost eight weeks of relaxation, but decided that a last comeback was not on the cards. Although she never officially retired, Krone has motivatingly speaking and natural instructions since these last trips in Santa Anita Park and raised her daughter Lorelei with Hovdey.
In retrospect for this Halcyon season with a half -wide and this breeding cup victory, Candy Ride and its Pacific classic and much more, it is hard for crown to choose a highlight. Instead, she thought about the whole experience, the final for a career in Hall of Fame.
“The whole thing would not do one thing, but together, that's the story. It is not a race, but it is to do it every day, ”considered Krone.
“But in my entire career, in my whole life to do it best, what I've ever done on some of the best horses I have ever done, and to compete against some of the best jockeys, that's the story for me.”
