Dr. Tracy Turner, a board-certified surgeon and sports medicine specialist, will take the lead at AAEP

Tracy Turner, DVM, MS, DACVS, DACVSMR, partner at Turner Wilson Equine Consulting in Stillwater, Minn., was installed as president of the American Association of Equine Practitioners during the Dec. 10 President's Dinner at the AAEP's 70th Annual Meeting in Orlando. Florida.

Dr. Turner retired from private practice in December 2023 after focusing exclusively on equine sports medicine, lameness and surgery at his Turner Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery. He founded the practice in 2016 after 12 years at Anoka Equine Veterinary Services in Elk River, Minnesota. He came to Anoka Equine after 23 years in academia as an assistant professor at the University of Illinois (1981-1983). full associate professor at the University of Florida (1983–1990); and full professor at the University of Minnesota (1991–2004). Dr. Turner received his veterinary degree from Colorado State University in 1978.

He has served as a consultant for the USDA Horse Protection Program, the Fédération Equestre Internationale, the United States Equestrian Federation and the American Quarter Horse Association. As a volunteer for the Equitarian Initiative, run by his wife Dr. Co-founded by Julie Wilson, Dr. Turner also provided medical care for working equines and education for students and caregivers in Central America.

Dr. Turner has been an AAEP member since 1986 and previously served on the board from 2017 to 2019; as Chair of the Farrier Liaison Committee; and as a member of the Educational Programs and Student Relations Committees and the Foundation Advisory Board. He was instrumental in founding the AAEP student group's Veterinary Podiatry Workshops in the early 1990s and served as a faculty advisor for the AAEP student group at the University of Minnesota for many years.

Beyond the AAEP, Dr. Turner president of the Minnesota Horse Council, the Minnesota Association of Equine Practitioners and the American Academy of Thermology; and on the board of the American Academy of Equine Sports Medicine. In addition, he has authored more than 110 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 31 book chapters and has given hundreds of presentations in the United States and internationally.
