Donation from the Fresh York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association supports the launch of Cornell Equine

The Fresh York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association (NYTHA) has made a generous contribution of $25,000 to support the development of Cornell Equine. Rooted in Cornell University's affluent tradition of scientific research, clinical care and education and housed at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), this cross-campus program aims to advance equine health and training through increased collaboration among interdisciplinary teams.

“We are very grateful to NYTHA for their support in making Cornell Equine a reality,” says Dr. Mandi de Mestre, professor of equine medicine in the Baker Institute for Animal Health and the Department of Biomedical Sciences at CVM. “This gift will assist us take the first steps toward leveraging the extraordinary breadth of skills among Cornell faculty to address fresh research questions in equine health and safety and build leadership capacity for the future. A coordinated equine program will also support the university’s efforts to attract and retain the best veterinary students to equine practice by providing improved and coordinated access to training opportunities, faculty support and industry.”

“The College of Veterinary Medicine has a long tradition of promoting research and clinical outcomes that have had a lasting impact on the Thoroughbred industry and equine health and care,” said Tina Marie Bond, president of the NYTHA. “We are pleased to support the College in building on that legacy.”

This donation will be critical to Cornell Equine's first phase of development, which will launch a fresh, two-way communications platform where horse owners, trainers and veterinarians can discuss their most pressing issues to ultimately guide future research and education programs. This platform will improve the dissemination of research findings to benefit equine management and clinical services nationally. This first phase of the initiative is already underway and is expected to be available to the entire equine industry in summer 2025.
