“We've always looked at the market, not just in the U.S. but around the world, to see what's working and what's not, what we could potentially try, and that's what we've been talking about for the last two or three years years,” said Tony Lacy, vice president of sales at Keeneland.

“We host the Breeders' Cup and have a great relationship with Del Mar. We sponsor the Del Mar Oaks, so the Breeders' Cup is a natural partner for us.”

“There are horses that continue and also have plans for next year. Pandora's Gift ran a great race with us at Keeneland a few weeks ago, finishing third in the Franklin Stakes. Offering to her seemed like a natural decision; With the current revitalization of the turf program here, there is a lot of interest and opportunity so she could have a very fruitful year.”

A 1/40 share of the undefeated sensation <span class=airline whose first foals are sold this year could fetch a significant sum considering a similar example sold at Keeneland for $4.6 million following his retirement in 2022.

“We sold the initial partial interest after Flightline won the Breeders' Cup Classic and I don't think he's disappointed anyone so far,” Lacy said.

“His foals are stunning, I haven't seen a bad one and I think he's just such an appealing stallion who is known all over the world. There is also a stallion share in Cogburn, a teenage horse who is retiring after the breeders' conference. Cup turf sprint.

“He was a wonderful horse and will commute to Australia as well as stand here. He is a wonderful outcross for many mares, he would suit so many broodmare associations and I think he will be incredibly popular.”

The other horses that are hired also have a 25% stake Bucchero 'S Book'em Damage a Grade 1 this summer at Saratoga Race Course placing in the Saudi Derby (G3) while consistently Cornell is offered and is another who could excel as an international globetrotter.

Lacy is confident the sale will serve a useful purpose on the occasion before the company turns its attention to next month's November sale, which will feature a huge collection of foals and breeding stock, including a number of essential departures .

“We weren’t planning on getting 30 or 40 horses, it’s a party with a sale as part of it,” he said. “We hosted a party at the last Breeders' Cup that was a diminutive and intimate occasion and something that I think the Breeders' Cup team found fascinating.”

“When we spoke to them we thought we could find something that would go hand in hand by selling a few horses that had some sort of connection or were of high quality and that's what it turned into. The number seems to be where we want to be. “We don’t want to take over the event, we just want to be a part of it, make it fun and hopefully provide an stimulating opportunity.”
