If next to the rival Satin doll lined up in the goal in front of the TVG Del Mar Debutante (G1), And tell me, Nolies Could have easily been upset, especially considering she was a two-year-old filly who had only competed twice. Instead, the And Tell Me Nolies remained level-headed and delivered a professional performance, prevailing down the home stretch and defeating the favorites Home cooking through a head.
The race was slightly delayed due to the incident and Satin Doll suffered a scratch. To do this, the horses had to be driven backwards out of the gate and reloaded. When the starter was finally able to send the field on its way, And Tell Me Nolies had to withstand some bumps and jostles and ended up second to last in the seven-horse field.
Arella Star an interloper from Florida, took the early lead and accelerated through the first quarter mile in :22.01 Kissed by fire And Quick and shiny very close to her. Home Cooking, the 7-10 pick under Mike Smith, then quickly advanced on the outside and took the lead approaching the half-mile pole. She led by 1 1/2 lengths at the three-eighths pole and completed the first half mile in :44.36.
Ice dance a girl trained by Richard Mandella, ran up outside Home Cooking and left the quarter pole. Meanwhile, And Tell Me Nolies, piloted by Ramon Vazquez, readily advanced to appear at the end of the alley.
Passing Ice Dancing, And Tell Me Nolies set his sights on Home Cooking, who had a three-length lead in the middle distance. With each step And Tell Me Nolies grew closer to the lead and Home Cooking tired overdue as And Tell Me Nolies just caught the favorite at the barrier and stopped the timer for seven furlongs in 1:23.29. Home Cooking finished 3 3/4 lengths ahead of Ice Dancing.
And Tell Me Nolies, 3-1 in the morning, emerged as the fifth choice at 9-1 and paid $21.60 to win. Peter Miller trains the filly for owner Peter Redekop and presents it at sea July 23, the second day of the meeting. And Tell Me Nolies was squeezed between rivals at the turn of the five-eighths-mile race and finished fourth behind winner Satin Doll. In a 6 1/2-eighths-mile maiden race on August 14, And Tell Me Nolies ran inside the pacemaker and was the favorite Halosnheaven and then fought valiantly against him throughout to prevail with a lead.
Vazquez was with And Tell Me Nolies in all three starts. With the Debutante, the jockey won the first Class 1 winner of his career in the mainland United States, although he had previously flown a Class 1 winner in Puerto Rico.
“I told (Miller) I had confidence in this filly from the beginning,” Vazquez said. “I’m glad he was steadfast to me and let me ride her this time. She was a runner the whole time today and I knew I would be the winner in the end.”
“I didn’t see a lot of speed in that form,” the coach said. “I think he (Vazquez) wanted to get to a position, which he did. I liked some of his moves. At the five-eighths pole when he beat Cedillo (Abel Cedillo on). Vegas magic ) to the spot, and then as he walked them outside around the two-and-a-half mile long pole, I felt really good.
Redekop racing director Bryan Anderson represented the owner of Debutante. Anderson purchased And Tell Me No Lies for $230,000 from consignor Off the Hook at this year's Ocala Breeders Sales Company spring 2-year-olds-in-training sale. The filly had previously sold for $70,000 to DJ Stable out of Mulholland Springs consignment for the 2021 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale. Lara Run grew the products Exchange rate mare Be fair in Kentucky.
Bob Baffert, the home cooking trainer and the leading trainer of Debutante winners at 10, also trained Arrogate. Home Cooking had her first record broken by 9 1/4 lengths at Del Mar on Aug. 21, and her owners, Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, are atop the Del Mar standings heading into closing day Sept. 11 .
D. Wayne Lukas, second to Baffert with nine debut winners, trained Be Fair, winner of the 2009 St. George Stakes (G3). Saratoga. Be Fair is a half-sister of the first class winner Millionaire Macho again .
