“It was really special,” Cohen said. “And Sassy (Suances), we didn’t have much luck with her and some of the California stallions, so I sent her to Kentucky and we got lucky.”
“I thought he (Artistic Cause) was a value at the time, I don't normally like spending more than $40,000 on stud fees. So at the time it was a suitable crossbreed and good value for money.”

“(Trainer Mark Glatt) was confident in him the whole time and it wasn’t a huge surprise to us,” Cohen said of his Seabiscuit Handicap win. “But horse racing is horse racing, you have to be lucky.”

Although Cohen only owns one broodmare, he has been breeding horses with great success for over 30 years, but today focuses primarily on his racing business.

Cohen founded a partnership group called Rancho Temescal Thoroughbred Partners after the death of his father, Jed Cohen. Cohen and his father had always owned horses together and he wanted to make horse ownership available to those who wanted to get involved in Thoroughbred racing.
“I always had people who wanted to work with us, but we couldn't because we just tried to keep it straightforward,” he said. “When my father died, I was able to call all the people who wanted to work with us and stick to what we were doing, which was buying European horses.”
“We mainly focus on turf horses, they tend to last a little longer and we just enjoy this type of racing.”
Each partnership group averages nine partners, and Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal currently have about 17 horses in training with Glatt at the California track.
Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal have raced numerous graded stakes horses over the years, including Irish-bred Quattroelle, the Grade 1 winner Schivel multiple 1st grade winner Janet and her fellow 1st grade winner River Boyne who earned $1,229,918 over the course of his career. Cohen chose River Boyne as a two-year-old at the 2017 Tattersalls Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale for $97,358. The son of Dandy man has developed into a successful stallion in Ireland and is currently at the Tara Stud.
The stable achieved leading owner status in 2022 during the Santa Anita and Del Mar fall meets, with much of its success coming from racehorses it purchased in Europe and developed into stakes winners in North America.
Cohen will look to add a few more horses to the stable at the Tattersalls Breeding Stock Sale December 2-5 for his growing partnerships.
