Breeding feather in the seller's cap

Seller Barry Donoghue had a lucrative two days at the Fresh Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale last week and has now celebrated a significant result in a different role.

Under his BMD Bloodstock banner, his draft was highlighted by a Toronado colt that was knocked down for $625,000 and scorching on the heels of his Karaka success, the homebred Globe won the Listed Cranbourne Cup (1600m) on Saturday.

“I was thrilled, I don’t breed many so to be a black type breeder now is fantastic,” Donoghue said.

Originally sold via Cambria Park draft at the National Yearling Sale for $22,000, Globe was purchased after a trial win in Taupo from the stable of the slow Toby Autridge of Roll The Dice Racing in a deal brokered by bloodstock agent Phill Cataldo.

The son of Charm Spirit has now won five of his nine starts for Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, but unfortunately Donoghue lost dam Bonnie Doon earlier this year.

She was an unraced Don Eduardo mare whose brother Booming won twice at Group 1 level.

“At the end of her last pregnancy we were struggling with her feet and we took her to Contributer right and pregnant, but she lost the foal and started regressing again and unfortunately she died,” Donoghue said.

“We have an Ace High colt from her going to the yearling sale next year. He will appear in Book 1 and is a handsome horse.

“He will go through Fraser Jones’ Cambria Park draft, he owns half the colt with me.”

Donoghue's focus is on the Ready to Run Sale and was thrilled with last week's results.

“We had a great sale, we are going in the right direction and that is very pleasing,” he said.

“We had a nice design and I was very cheerful with the product we brought there. Some got more than expected and others sold for what we expected.

“We took a few home that we thought would sell, but that’s just part of it.”

The son of Toronado, who topped the draft, is out of the Zabeel mare Attraction, a half-sister to Gr.1 Goodwood Handicap (1200m) winner Velocitea and the dam of multiple top winner Loving Gaby.

“He was definitely the standout, he was always going to be the main horse for us,” Donoghue said.

“He was a great guy and moved really well. He had a good attitude and had the right stud to get the Hong Kong money.

“He was always going to shine for us and we just didn’t know to what extent. It was very worthwhile for the customers. When they send these quality horses it is essential that we get them to perform at their best, so it was very pleasing.”

BMD Bloodstock also sold a Wootton Bassett gelding to Victoria's Lucky Dip Investments for $280,000, while Lindsay Park Racing bought a Per Incanto colt for $260,000 and Hong Kong trainer Ricky Yiu bought a son of Capitalist for $220,000 bought.
