Santa Anita Parks Horse Safety in Summit in focus

At the beginning of 2019 during an enhance in horse stresses Santa Anita Park And the following negative advertising, coach Tim Yakteen, like others, was asked about the incidents, even if he was outside the race track.

“Go to Starbucks just wanted to slip and slip. They didn't want to talk about it,” said the coach, based in Southern California, and noticed his self-confidence.

Five years later, California dramatically reduced his deaths after rule and cultural changes, and Yakteen has changed from questions from occasional observers to publicly attract security improvements. Santa Anita, who recently completed his Hollywood meeting, had only two deaths in the musculoskeletal horses over six months from December 26 to June 17. This reflected a safety brand of 99.97% compared to the 6,678 horses.

Santa Anita, who is one of the country's most frequently used racetracks for the morning training, also had five deaths in the musculoskeletal system during the first half of the year.

“The changes that took place were and are something that I am very proud of,” said Yakteen on June 25th at the 11th well -being and the safety of the racing horse summit from the Longship Room in the Kroger Field in Lexington.

During a conversation with two people entitled “5 years later-a update to Santa Anita security reforms” next to Dr. Dionne Benson, Chief Veterinary Officer for 1/ST racing, gave Yakteen his view of security and regulation procedures in California.

Many of the California rules were reflected in the regulations that were largely issued by the Horseseracing integrity and security authority. Although Yakteen initially suspected that the modern rules in California would be a challenge, he said that he had determined the transition to adaptation to them as “very polished”.

These rules for the improvement of the security and well -being of the horses – with joint efforts by the stakeholders in California, from riders to tracks and the state supervisory authority, the California Horse Racing Board, medication regulations were obsolete. In addition, changes to animal interventions, training registrations, monitored training, increased access to advanced diagnostics and support for injured racing horses.

For the latter, this meant that horses with closed individual distal member injuries were radiographed before euthanasia and potential surgical options.

Benson said that one of these options, a fetlock arthrodesis program that started in 2020, was a success. In this procedure, plates and screws are used to stabilize a connection by fusing bones, removing movement and ensuring stability.

After decades ago, Benson found that sometimes only the most valuable racehorses went through the process. Some believed that this merger could affect the quality of life of a horse.

But she said that in the last 4 1/2 years of this surgical program in California 16 out of 24 horses that have passed this procedure were “saved”.

She showed a video of several other tasks in the second career and commented on one: “I tried to adopt this horse; someone beat me.”

Although the deaths of races have dropped in the last six months during the race in Santa Anita Park, the deaths in the state have increased in 2024 compared to the first half of the year both in 2023 and 2022. However, the numbers are far from, as noted last week last week in the centers of Chrb, Scott Chaney, last week.

During the Chrb meeting, Chaney also found that two upcoming regulations will come into force on January 1st. The more remarkable the two are necessary that a veterinarian present conducts diagnostic imaging within seven days after the injection of a corticosteroid into a high-motion joint.

Changes that started in California that spread elsewhere have also led to an improvement in security, said Benson.

It said Gulfstream Park Establishment in Südflorida after carrying out the necessary veterinary examination procedures for entry and workouts that were originally implemented in California.

Both Yakteen and Benson recognized the veterinary costs of such exams, but they both stopped for the price. Yakteen said that close investigations by runners, including diagnostics, can recognize physical problems in an earlier point in time. This can mean less time for this horse in recovery.
