Horse of the Year; One for next year

Kind Of Blue after winning the Qipco British Champions Sprint, a race his family has made their own | Race photos

Choosing his favorite horse for 2024 is all about family for Tom Frary, and that goes for the electrifying teenage father of this talented sprinter.

Horse of the Year: Kind Of Blue

There is nothing better than seeing families produce good horses time and time again, especially when they have been with the same owner-breeder-trainer combination over the years. Kind Of Blue (GB) (Blue Point {Ire}) represents exactly that, as his original owners Michelle Morris and Jan and Peter Hopper also had great success with his dam's brother Deacon Blues (GB) (Compton Place {GB}). Kind Of Blue emulated the former Fanshawe trainee by winning the British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot, but he did it a year earlier after enduring some tough battles along the way, including being knocked out of the Haydock Sprint Cup was displaced.

Kind Of Blue has all its class, but perhaps the key is that it comes from Blue Point, who gave it that extra something to take it to the next level. Take a look at his debut win at Kempton and you'll see it was all there from the start, just as it was when another of the stable's stars, Soviet Song (GB), won on her debut there in 2002. When a Fanshawe horse wins the first time you have to be careful and it was great to see Pegasus Stables' humble maestro have another successful year thanks to this crack sprinter and Derby runner-up Ambiente Cordial (Ire). (Gleneagles {Irish}).

One for next year: Falakeyah

Stallion follows: Blue Point

Not exactly a left-field proposition, but after the start this kid got in stud, the sky's the limit. Shamardal already gave us Lope De Vega (Ireland) and now he has delivered another star sire. With Kind Of Blue, the brilliant St James's Palace Stakes and Irish 2,000 Guineas hero Rosallion (Ire) and the super-charged Huge Evs (Ire) already in his locker, along with the electrifying two-year-old Sky Majesty (Ire), the For The way is clear for him to attract some top producers and stronger mares who will produce these classic horses year after year.
